What is auto insurance?

Auto insurance is a contract between you and your insurance company that protects you against financial loss in the event of an accident or theft.

Basic personal auto insurance is mandated by many U.S. states. We’ve partnered with a variety of carriers, which means we can search our network to find the right coverage for your needs and budget.

Who is covered by your auto insurance policy?

You, as well as any family members on your auto insurance policy, are covered. Whether you’re driving your own car or someone else’s, everyone on your policy is covered. Your policy also provides coverage if someone else is driving your car.

For a personal auto policy, any instance of personal driving is covered by your insurance, such as commuting to work, dropping off your children at school, or driving to the grocery store. Any commercial driving is not covered, such as delivering food for a business. Driving for a ridesharing app, such as Uber or Lyft, is also not covered under your personal auto policy.

Your auto insurance policy may include

Bodily injury liability

Covers costs associated with injuries or death that you or another driver causes while driving your car.

Property damage liability

Reimburses others for damages that you or another driver operating your car causes to another vehicle or property, such as a fence or building.

Collision coverage

Covers your vehicle if it overturns or collides with another vehicle or object, including trees, guardrails, or fences.

Comprehensive coverage

Protects against damage to your car from events beyond your control, including theft, glass damage, vandalism, falling trees, and more.

Medical payments or personal injury protection

Provides reimbursement for medical expenses for injuries to you or your passengers.

Uninsured motorist coverage

Reimburses you when an accident is caused by an uninsured driver, or in the case of a hit-and-run. You can also purchase underinsured motorist coverage, which covers costs when another driver lacks adequate coverage.

Auto insurance add-ons

An auto insurance add-on is extra coverage added to your policy for a specific need. Add-ons vary by insurance carrier, but one of the most common auto insurance add-ons is accident forgiveness. Accident forgiveness prevents any previous accidents from impacting your monthly payments for your insurance policy.

What happens when you get a quote?

1
Customer requests a quote

The customer provides the basic required information for a quote to one of our insurance agents. This information would be your name, date of birth, license number, and license plate number.

2
Verifying coverages

The insurance agent will verify your needs for your insurance policy. Our agents work to make sure that you have the required coverages you need to drive with the right insurance in the state of Massachusetts, as well as any added coverages you may need.

3
The agent writes up a quote

Based on the information that you provide to our agents, they will write up a quote for you, and contact you with several differently priced options, to see what fits your budget. We work with many carriers, so finding you the right coverage at the most affordable price is the name of our game.

4
Signing the contract

If the customer likes the terms and the price, the insurance agent sends over an application. The customer fills out the application, and sends in a down payment on the policy.

Terminology

Premium

Deductible

The out-of-pocket expense that you are required to pay before your insurer will cover your claim.

Gap insurance

When something happens to your car, and there is a gap between what you owe on your car and what the policy covers, gap insurance covers the difference.

Rate

The cost of your unit of insurance.
